Coconut Grove Custom Millwork

Grove interiors reward restraint. Ceilings are often lower than in newer construction, rooms are smaller and more numerous, and the windows are doing something interesting with the light. Heavy, ornate joinery fights all of that. Most of what we build here is quieter — painted built-ins that sit flush, bookcases that follow an odd wall, banquettes tucked into a bay.

We do a fair amount of repair and matching as well. A rotted sill under a window seat, a run of original bead board that lost a section, a stair balustrade with three missing balusters. Those jobs are about matching a profile and a patina rather than designing something new, and they need a shop willing to take on small, fiddly scopes.

On the waterfront side, along South Bayshore and out toward the marinas, the work shifts toward larger contemporary interiors, where the constraint becomes salt-laden air rather than shade and slow drying.

Older houses are unforgiving of shortcuts. Nothing is square, the framing has moved, and a cabinet built to nominal dimensions will not fit. That is normal here, and it is what our field measure is actually for.

• Comfortable with old framing. Everything is scribed to the conditions we find rather than to the dimensions we hoped for.
• Repair and matching welcomed. Small scopes — a bead board run, a missing baluster, a rotted sill — are worth our time.
• Scaled to the room. Detailing tuned to lower ceilings and smaller rooms rather than imported from a larger house.
• Finishes that can be touched up. Formulas recorded so a scuff in year five is a repair, not a replacement.
